Read MoreIanne De Leon is a Filipino-American mixed media artist from Hayward, California. In 2020, she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Digital Media Art from San Jose State University. In her work, De Leon expresses emotional ideas inspired by life events that leads to personal growth. Mainly working in 3d modeling and animation, she utilizes found digital objects and the technical processes of combining digital mediums to show seamless technical evolution. She hopes to communicate the idea that all emotions and experiences are valued and that we should not be afraid to express them.
My work dares to explore associating art with human emotions, especially emotional turmoil. More specifically, I envision my work as an extension of emotional expression and personal growth. The use of images and video are the gateway that highlight these senses and offer ways of overcoming these heavy feelings through the ability of visual expression.
Human emotion has been a driving force for much of my work. Emotion is a valuable part of personality and being able to add a feeling to a piece gives my art personal meaning. The emotions that run through me manifest themselves in the photographs and videos I have documented. Many of my works are inspired by emotions that I have felt during the process of each piece; my works not only serve as an emotional representation, but also as stamps throughout my life that document the experiences I have gone through and the emotional and mental state at the time. Each person feels differently, however, not only do emotions give us character, but also the combination of characteristics and qualities that make up who we are.
The process of my work utilizes and emphasizes the use and combinations of found material as well as technical expansion. From the imagination, I take the idea into researching materials that fit into the idea. From there, I combine the sources into a single uniform piece that expresses my intentions. Part of my practice also incorporates techniques that add onto each other. A single element may be recurring in many pieces, but the technique changes and adds a new element to look for. The sources that I find, the combinations I create digitally, and the additions of new media not only form an alternative reality, but they also allude to the physical reality.
The collection of works as they feature emotion and personality come to the overall sense of identity and how do I see each piece evolve with their own identity, but also tie back to my own identity. My pieces serve as a personal reminder of who I was and am, what I have been through, and how I have felt, but, most importantly, each piece is an indication of how I have grown as an artist and as a person. To me, art is a way to embrace human emotions by utilizing and taking advantage of feelings and putting a deeper meaning into art pieces. I want to communicate to other artists and my audience that all emotions are valued and that we shouldn’t be afraid to express them.
